What Prefix Matching Actually Does
A prefix is a group of letters that appears at the beginning of a word. The Prefix Word Finder performs a strict startsWith() check: every word in the database is tested to confirm that its first characters match your input exactly. INTER matches INTERNATIONAL, INTERCOLLEGIATE, INTERMEDIATE — not EXTERIOR, WINTER, or SPRINT, which contain those letters but not at position zero.
The engine processes the entire 74,872-word database in your browser in under 50 milliseconds for any prefix. No server is involved. No data is sent anywhere. Results are displayed immediately with word length and Scrabble base score shown on each result card. The tool processes correctly for any prefix length — from a single letter to a multi-letter sequence like SUPER or TRANS.
The tool does not perform fuzzy matching, stemming, or relevance ranking. It returns every word that starts with your exact input — which is exactly what makes it useful for Scrabble rack management, crossword fill, and vocabulary research. The result set is always complete: no words starting with your prefix are omitted.

When to Use Prefix Searching
Scrabble rack extension: when you have RE, UN, or DIS available at the start of a rack, a prefix search shows every word you can form. Combined with the length filter, you can narrow to words that fit the remaining space on the board. Sort by Scrabble score to find the highest-value play from a given prefix.
Crossword fill: when crossing letters reveal the opening letters of an answer, a prefix search returns every valid candidate. Use the length filter to match the crossword cell count. The alphabetical sort makes it easier to scan for likely candidates from a long result list.

Prefix Length Statistics — Average Word Lengths
OVER- words average 9.2 characters — above the database mean of 8.1. INTER- words average 11.3 characters, reflecting the tendency of this Latin prefix to combine with longer learned vocabulary roots. RE- words span the widest length range: from RE (2 letters) to REINVESTIGATION (15 letters), covering every word length in between. PRE- and SUPER- words cluster around 8–12 characters, reflecting their use in technical and formal vocabulary. The length filter is particularly useful when working with these longer-average prefix groups to restrict results to playable Scrabble or crossword lengths.
