What "Words From Letters" Means

Finding words from letters means taking your available letter set and discovering every valid English word that can be built from any combination of those letters. The solver does not require you to use every letter — it runs in Subset mode, which means a 3-letter result from a 7-letter input is just as valid as a 7-letter result.

This is the right tool for Scrabble rack exploration, Boggle board scanning, Bananagrams tile management, and any game where you want to see the full range of plays available from your current letters — not just the longest word or the most valuable one, but every option at every length.

The tool does not solve crossword clues, interpret definitions, or match positional patterns. For crossword patterns (e.g. a 7-letter word with E in position 3), use the Missing Letter Finder instead.

Who Should Use This Tool?

01
Scrabble & WWF Players
Enter your 7-tile rack to see every play available — from 2-letter parallel words to 7-letter bingos. Sort by Scrabble Score to find your highest-value option, or filter to a specific length to match the board's open positions.
02
Boggle & Boggle-Style Players
Enter the letters visible on your Boggle board or in a grid region. The solver finds all valid words from those tiles — sorted longest-first so high-scoring long words appear immediately. Useful for competitive Boggle where spotting long words quickly is the key skill.
03
Bananagrams & Word Cookies Players
For Bananagrams, enter your current tile hand to see all plays available from those letters. For Word Cookies, enter the game's given letter set — results grouped by length match the game's length-by-length structure exactly.
04
NYT Spelling Bee Players
Enter all 7 Spelling Bee letters with the required centre letter always included. Results show every word the tool finds from those letters. Pangrams — words using all 7 letters — appear in the 7-letter tab. The Spelling Bee requires 4+ letter words, so scroll past the shorter results.

How the Solver Works

The solver converts your input into a character frequency map — a count of each letter available. MASTER becomes {M:1, A:1, S:1, T:1, E:1, R:1}. Every word in the database is then tested: can this word's letter requirements be met by your frequency map? Any word whose needs fit within your available counts is added to results.

Results are grouped by word length. A 6-letter input like MASTER might produce 4 six-letter words (MASTER, STREAM, REMAST, TAMERS), 20 five-letter words (ASTER, MARES, MATES, RATES…), 43 four-letter words, and 34 three-letter words — 101 results in total, spanning every usable length.

Blank tiles or unknown letters are handled by ? wildcards. Each ? satisfies one missing letter requirement when checking each candidate word. SILEN? (five letters plus one blank) returns 510 words across all lengths — 19 at 6 letters, 115 at 5 letters, and so on down to 3-letter words.

All processing runs in your browser. Your letters are never sent to any server.

From Letters to Every Possible Word

One letter set produces words at every length. The solver finds them all in a single pass:

INPUT M A S T E R 6 letters any order FREQ MAP M : 1 A : 1 S : 1 T : 1 E : 1 R : 1 ~75k words checked RESULTS BY LENGTH 6 letters (4): MASTER STREAM TAMERS… 8 pts each (TWL) 5 letters (20): ASTER MARES RATES… 5–8 pts range 4 letters (43): ARMS ARES TAME… 3 letters (34): ART EAR MAR… 101 total words SCORE SORT optional STREAM 8 pts MATER 7 pts

MASTER → frequency map → database scan → 101 words grouped by length (6, 5, 4, 3 letters). Optional Scrabble score sort reranks the full list by TWL tile value. All verified against the actual word database.

Verified Examples

Every result below was generated by running the solver against the word database. Counts and word lists are exact.

InputLongest Words (verified)Total WordsLengths Covered
MASTER MASTER, STREAM, REMAST, TAMERS (all 6-letter) 101 3, 4, 5, 6
LISTEN ENLIST, INLETS, LISTEN, SILENT, TINSEL (all 6-letter) 73 3, 4, 5, 6
TRIANGLE ALERTING, ALTERING, INTEGRAL, RELATING, TANGLIER, TRIANGLE (all 8-letter) 256 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
AEINRST NASTIER, RETAINS, RETINAS, STAINER, STEARIN (all 7-letter) 187 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
SILEN? ALIENS, ALINES, ENLIST, INLETS, INSOLE, LESION (all 6-letter) 510 3, 4, 5, 6

SILEN? uses 5 letters plus one wildcard (?). The wildcard fills whichever single letter is needed for each candidate word. 510 results across four length groups.

Length Filtering and Game-Specific Targets

After results appear, use the length tabs to focus on the words that matter for your game:

01
Scrabble Bingos — 7-Letter Tab
Filter to 7 letters to find bingo plays that use all your rack tiles and earn a 50-point bonus. AEINRST in the 7-letter tab shows NASTIER, RETAINS, RETINAS, STAINER, and STEARIN — five confirmed bingos from one rack.
02
Wordle Candidates — 5-Letter Tab
Filter to 5 letters to find Wordle candidates from your confirmed letters. Enter known letters and use ? for unknowns — the 5-letter tab shows all valid candidates. Works for Quordle and other 5-letter variants too.
03
Word Cookies — Match Game Levels
Word Cookies presents a group of letters and asks for words of increasing length. Use the length tabs to work level by level — 3-letter tab, then 4, then 5, and so on. The solver's grouped output matches this progression exactly.
04
Spelling Bee Pangrams — 7-Letter Tab
NYT Spelling Bee pangrams use all 7 given letters. Enter your 7 letters with the required centre letter always included, then click the 7-letter tab. Any result there uses all your available letters — that is a pangram candidate.

Tips for Better Results

01
Use Your Complete Letter Pool as Input
Include every letter in your available set. The solver finds all combinations — entering more letters reveals more results. For Scrabble, enter all 7 rack tiles including any blank tiles as ?.
02
Use ? for Every Blank Tile
Enter ? for each blank tile or missing letter. SILEN? with one blank returns 510 words across all lengths. Two blanks (SILE??) returns even more. The wildcard fills whichever letter is needed for each candidate word.
03
Score Sort for Competitive Play
Switch sort to Scrabble Score to see your highest-value play at the top — regardless of word length. A 4-letter word with X, Z, or Q may outscore a 6-letter word. Score sort surfaces those plays immediately.
04
Letter Order Does Not Matter
Type letters in any sequence. MASTER, STREAM, and RSTAME all produce identical results — 101 words. The solver converts input to a frequency count, not a sequence. Enter whatever order is convenient.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using Exact mode when you want Subset mode. Exact mode returns only words that use every input letter exactly once — it's for Jumble puzzles, not for finding all words from a rack. If you switch to Exact mode, you'll see a fraction of the available results. Switch back to Subset for full game exploration.

Forgetting blank tiles. A blank tile is your most flexible asset. Always enter it as ? — the solver tries all 26 letter options for each blank and adds every valid result. Missing this step can hide your best plays.

Setting minimum length too high. For Boggle and Bananagrams, short 3-letter plays are often exactly what you need. Keep the minimum at 3 (the default) and use the length tabs to focus rather than raising the minimum, which removes shorter results permanently.

Expecting dictionary definitions. This tool finds valid game words from a letter set. It does not provide definitions, synonyms, or clue meanings. For word meanings, consult a dictionary after identifying your candidate words here.

The two tools use the same underlying solver. The difference is in context and emphasis. This page is built for players who want to find every word available from their current tile set across multiple games. The Anagram Finder is better for vocabulary discovery, true anagram pairs, and puzzle design where Exact mode matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 'words from letters' mean?
Finding words from letters means taking a collection of available letters and discovering every valid English word that can be built from any combination of those letters. Unlike a true anagram finder, this tool finds words of all lengths — including short words that use only a few of your available letters.
How do I use this tool?
Enter your available letters in any order and click Solve. Results appear sorted by length, with the longest words first. Use the length tabs to focus on a specific word length, or switch the sort to Scrabble Score to find your highest-value play.
What is the difference between this and the Anagram Finder?
Both tools use the same solver in Subset mode. The difference is framing and intended use. The Anagram Finder emphasises discovering all words hidden in a letter set, including true anagrams in Exact mode. This Words From Letters page emphasises practical game play: finding every word you can make from your available tiles, grouped by length.
How does the wildcard ? work here?
Type ? for each blank tile or missing letter. Each ? satisfies one unsatisfied letter requirement when checking each candidate word. SILEN? finds every word needing S, I, L, E, N plus any one additional letter — returning 510 words across all lengths. The position of ? in your input does not matter.
Can I find words by a specific length?
Yes — after the solver returns results, click any length tab to filter the list to words of exactly that length. This is useful for targeting Scrabble bingos (7 letters), Wordle candidates (5 letters), or Words With Friends plays of a specific length.
Does it work for Boggle and Bananagrams?
Yes — both games benefit from finding all words from a letter set. For Boggle, enter the letters visible on your board in Subset mode. For Bananagrams, enter your current tile hand to see all plays available. Results sorted longest-first show your best options immediately.
Is this the same as a word unscrambler?
A word unscrambler typically defaults to Exact mode — finding a specific word that uses every given letter, as in a Jumble puzzle. This tool defaults to Subset mode — finding all words from any combination of letters. Both modes are available here via the mode toggle, but the default and focus differ.
What word database does this tool use?
The database contains approximately 75,000 words combining the TWL (Tournament Word List for North American Scrabble), Collins Scrabble Words (used internationally), and standard English vocabulary. All words shown are confirmed valid English words.
Does it work for the NYT Spelling Bee?
Yes — enter your 7 given Spelling Bee letters with the required centre letter always included in your input. Results include words of 4 or more letters containing that centre letter. Filter to the 7-letter tab to find pangrams — words that use all 7 available letters.
Is the tool free to use?
Yes — completely free with no signup required, no daily limits, and no result truncation. The full word database is always available.
