What This Tool Does

The 3 Letter Anagram Solver returns every valid 3-letter word from any combination of your input letters. The filter is locked to exactly 3 letters. Results are Scrabble-scored (TWL tile values) and sorted highest-value first.

The database contains 1,040 valid 3-letter words from the TWL and Collins Scrabble Words lists. At this length, some high-scoring words appear: QAT (12pts), ZAX (19pts), ZEP (14pts). Enter your tiles to find every 3-letter play available.

Who Should Use This?

01
Scrabble Short Play Finder
3-letter words are the workhorse of Scrabble short plays — they reach tight board gaps, hook onto existing words in multiple directions, and often score more than expected when placed on premium squares.
02
Crossword Short Entry Solver
Three-letter crossword entries are very common. Enter the letters you know (? for unknowns) and filter to 3-letter results to find all candidates matching your available letter constraints.
03
Boggle Short-Word Hunter
In Boggle, 3-letter words score 1 point each and appear frequently in any grid region. Finding all valid 3-letter plays from a section of tiles maximises your score from short adjacencies.
04
Vocabulary and Word Game Practice
3-letter words span a surprising range of vocabulary — from common words (ACT, ATE, CAT) to less-familiar Scrabble words (ZAX, QAT). Exploring the 1,040-word set builds game vocabulary effectively.

How the Solver Works

The solver builds a frequency map from your input and tests every 3-letter word in the database. A word passes if its 3 letter requirements fit within your available counts. Entering CAT returns ACT and CAT — both 3-letter anagrams using C, A, T.

Entering ATE returns ATE, EAT, ETA, and TEA — the complete 4-word set of 3-letter anagrams from those letters (A, T, E). Entering STONE returns 15 three-letter words from any 3 of those 5 letters. The solver processes any input length — entering your full Scrabble rack finds every 3-letter play available from any 3-tile combination within those 7 tiles.

Tips for Better Results

01
Score-First Strategy for High-Value Tiles
3-letter words containing Z (ZAX=19pts, ZEP=14pts), Q (QAT=12pts), J (JAB=12pts), X (AXE=10pts) score significantly more than common-letter words. Sort by score to find your highest-value short play immediately.
02
Enter More Than 3 Letters
Entering 5–7 letters in Subset mode shows every 3-letter word from any 3 of those letters. This gives you a complete view of all short plays available from your rack without needing to manually test each combination.
03
Combine With 2-Letter Results
Check both 2-letter and 3-letter results before committing to a board position. A play creating valid 2-letter perpendiculars often scores more than a standalone 3-letter play on the same square.
04
Exact Mode for 3-Letter Scrambles
If a puzzle gives you exactly 3 scrambled letters, switch to Exact mode. Exact mode returns only words using all 3 input letters exactly once — the correct constraint for 3-letter anagram puzzles.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Entering only 3 letters in Subset mode when more are available. Always enter your full rack. The filter is set to 3, so only 3-letter results appear — but entering more letters shows every 3-letter play from any combination of your tiles, not just one combination.

Assuming 3-letter words always score low. ZAX (19pts), ZEP (14pts), QAT (12pts) are 3-letter words that outscore most 5-letter plays. Check the high-value end of sorted results before assuming a short play is weak.
