Scrabble Scoring — The Complete System Explained
The Scrabble scoring system is built around two components: base tile values and board multipliers. This calculator handles base tile values — the point value printed on each physical tile. Board multipliers (Double Letter Score, Triple Letter Score, Double Word Score, Triple Word Score) are board-position dependent and require knowing where the word is placed on the physical board, information that a browser tool cannot know without a full board simulator.
Base tile values follow a simple principle: rarer letters score more. The standard North American Scrabble set contains 100 tiles. Of those, 42 tiles (including 2 blanks) are the nine most common letters (A, E, I, O, U, L, N, R, S, T). These 42 high-frequency tiles score only 1 point each. The 8 tiles valued at 2–5 points (D, G, B, C, M, P, F, H, V, W, Y, K) are present in smaller quantities. The 4 tiles valued at 8–10 points (J, X, Q, Z) appear exactly once each in the standard set. Blank tiles score 0 regardless of the letter they represent.
The bingo bonus (also called a blank bingo or seven-tile bonus) awards 50 additional points for using all 7 tiles in a single turn. This calculator shows base tile score only — add 50 manually for bingo plays. A 7-letter word with a base tile score of 12 becomes a 62-point play with the bingo bonus, which dramatically changes the rack management calculus. Bingo opportunities are one reason why keeping a balanced rack (several common 1-point tiles plus one or two higher-value tiles) tends to outperform trying to hold onto high-value tiles indefinitely.
For Words With Friends scoring: the letter point values in WWF differ slightly from Scrabble. In WWF, the tile distribution and values are modified from the classic Scrabble set. Most 1-point Scrabble letters remain 1 point in WWF, but some letters (notably C, which is 3 in Scrabble and 4 in WWF) differ. This calculator uses standard Scrabble (TWL tournament) values. For WWF-specific scoring, verify against the WWF tile reference separately.
Practical scoring knowledge for competitive play: memorising the 10-point tiles (Q and Z) and 8-point tiles (J and X) is the starting point. These four tiles appear only once each in the bag and change a rack's character significantly. A rack with Q and no U presents a specific challenge — the database contains 30 Q-without-U words (QI, QOPH, QANAT, TRANQ, and others) that can be played in this situation. A rack with Z allows words like JAZZ (33 base points), FIZZ (26 points), or BUZZ (24 points) that score disproportionately well for short words.

Using the Score Calculator — Practical Workflow
The most practical use of the score calculator is side-by-side comparison of play options. When the anagram solver returns multiple candidate words from a rack, entering each into the score calculator shows their base tile values before board multipliers. A word scoring 14 base points on a Double Word Score square scores 28 points; the same 14-point word on a Triple Word Score scores 42. Knowing the base score helps evaluate which word benefits most from available premium squares.
The blank tile feature is essential for accurate scoring. When a blank tile substitutes for a letter, that letter scores 0 points regardless of its normal value. A blank played as Z in JAZZ scores J(8)+A(1)+blank-Z(0)+Z(10)=19 points, not the 33 points two natural Z tiles would score. Entering the played word and marking the blank letter correctly gives the true tile score before any board multipliers are applied.
The score breakdown display shows each letter's individual contribution. This makes it immediately clear which tiles drive the word's score and which contribute minimally. A word scoring 18 points where 10 points come from a single Z tile is a different play-quality than a word where 18 points are distributed across multiple medium-value tiles — the second word is more consistent because it does not depend on one high-value tile being available.
Score Reference — Quick Summary
For quick reference: a 7-letter word with average tiles (no high-value letters) scores approximately 7–10 base points. A 7-letter word containing a K (5 pts) scores 11–16 base points. A 7-letter word containing a Z or Q (10 pts each) scores 16–21 base points before any board multipliers. These ranges help estimate whether a play is worth targeting a premium square versus settling for open board position.
