How the Spelling Bee Engine Works
For each word in the 74,872-word database, the engine applies three tests: (1) length ≥ 4 letters, (2) every character in the word must appear in the allowed letter set, (3) the word must contain the required centre letter at least once. Words failing any test are excluded. Words using all 7 allowed letters (pangrams) are flagged separately.
The allowed-letter test uses a character membership check: every character in the word is in the allowed set. It does not count how many times each letter is used — letters may repeat freely. This matches the standard Spelling Bee rule.
Results are sorted longest-first, then alphabetically within each length group. Pangrams appear at the top of their length group with a visual flag. All processing runs in your browser with no server requests.

Spelling Bee Strategy — How to Use the Engine Effectively
The most effective workflow with this Spelling Bee engine is to enter all seven allowed letters including the centre letter, run the search, and review results grouped by length. Pangrams appear at the top of the results. Longer words (8+ letters) are rarer and worth more points in the actual game, so scanning those first is efficient. Shorter words (4–5 letters) are more numerous and easier to spot, but individually less valuable. A combined strategy of finding all pangrams first, then working through longer words, then cleaning up shorter words is consistent with reaching the highest scoring tiers.
The tool also serves as a vocabulary expansion resource. Searching a letter set and reviewing results often reveals valid English words that a player would not have thought of independently. This is particularly true for 7-letter and 8-letter results — words like LANCELOT, ANNOTATE, or COLONIAL that are dictionary-valid but not immediately recalled under time pressure. Reviewing the engine's complete result list before or after a session builds familiarity with the vocabulary associated with common letter combinations.
One important difference between this engine and the actual Spelling Bee game: this tool uses the 74,872-word database combining TWL and Collins Scrabble Words. The actual game uses a curated word list that excludes offensive words, proper nouns, and overly obscure words. Some results from this engine will not be accepted by the actual game. Conversely, some game-accepted common words may not appear in the Scrabble-oriented database. The overlap is substantial but not complete. Use this tool as a broad vocabulary reference rather than a definitive list of accepted answers.
Pangram detection is a core feature of this engine. A pangram uses every one of the seven allowed letters at least once. For many Spelling Bee configurations, finding the pangram is the most challenging and satisfying part of the puzzle. The engine flags pangrams in results with a star symbol and sorts them to the top of their length group. For the letter set A, C, E, L, N, O, T with centre letter A, the word LANCELOT is an 8-letter pangram using all seven letters exactly once. For letter sets where multiple pangrams exist, all are flagged and sorted to the top of results.
The minimum word length constraint of 4 letters is enforced by the engine to match the actual Spelling Bee rules. Two-letter words (AA, AB, AD, AE, AG, AH, AI, AL, AM, AN, AR) and three-letter words are excluded from results regardless of the letter configuration. The 4-letter minimum is technically encoded rather than filtered from results — the engine starts checking words at length 4 and ignores the 1,341 database words shorter than 4 characters.
Centre Letter Constraint — Why It Matters
The centre letter requirement is the single most restrictive constraint in the Spelling Bee rule set. For any letter set, the centre letter must appear in every valid answer without exception. This single requirement eliminates the majority of database words immediately. For a centre letter of A, every word not containing A is excluded — removing approximately 44% of the database in one constraint. For rarer centre letters like Q or Z, the constraint is even more restrictive. The engine applies this check as the first filter, making the overall search very fast: once the centre-letter check eliminates most words, the remaining allowed-letter check operates on a much smaller set.
Choosing which letter to use as the centre is not something the player controls in the actual game — the puzzle sets the centre letter. But understanding how centre-letter frequency affects result counts is useful for estimating puzzle difficulty. A centre letter of E (the most common letter in English, appearing in over 56,000 of the 74,872 database words) tends to produce many valid results. A centre letter of Q or Z produces very few valid results and may make a puzzle particularly challenging.
