Best Scrabble Words With X — All X Plays Ranked by Score
X scores 8 points and is the most flexible high-value tile in Scrabble. It has five valid two-letter words — more than any other high-value tile — making it playable in almost any board position. Every word below is verified against TWL.
Two-Letter X Words (All 5)
X has the most two-letter word options of any high-value tile in Scrabble. All five score 9 points base — the X(8) tile paired with a 1-point vowel or consonant.
| Word | Score | Definition | Best Board Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| AX | 9pts | A tool for chopping; to dismiss from a job | Place through A already on board |
| EX | 9pts | Former spouse or partner; the letter X | Play through E already on board |
| OX | 9pts | Adult castrated bull; a strong person | Place through O already on board |
| XI | 9pts | The fourteenth letter of the Greek alphabet | Play through I already on board |
| XU | 9pts | A monetary unit of Vietnam | Play through U already on board |
These five words are your primary X escape plays. Unlike Q (which has only QI) or J (which has only JO), X can connect to A, E, O, I, or U — five different vowels already on the board. This flexibility makes X far less risky to hold than Q or J.

X Tile Strategy
The Vowel-Cross Technique
X's five two-letter words all use vowels. The best X plays place X so it crosses a vowel already on the board, scoring two words simultaneously. If O already exists on the board in a usable position, playing OX vertically scores the OX word AND extends or creates a horizontal word through the O's existing position.
X on Premium Squares
X(8) on a Triple Letter Square = 24 points from that tile alone. Combined with the word's other letters, a short X word on TLS often outscores a longer word on regular squares. AX on a Triple Letter with X on the TLS = A(1) + X(24) = 25 points from two tiles.
ZAX: The Best Three-Letter Play
ZAX (19pts) combines Z and X in three letters — 18 points of value from just two high-scoring tiles plus one A(1). On a Triple Word Score, ZAX scores 57 points from three letters. Knowing ZAX is essential: it is the highest-scoring three-letter word in Scrabble and one of the most powerful short plays available.
