Q Without U: Every Valid Scrabble Word (Official TWL List)
The Q tile (10 points) is the most feared tile in Scrabble — but only for players who don't know these words. Every Q-without-U Scrabble word verified against the Tournament Word List (TWL), with definitions, point values, and strategy for each.
Why Q-Without-U Words Matter in Scrabble
The Q tile scores 10 points — second only to the Z tile — but carries a reputation for being difficult to play. Standard English spelling almost always places U after Q, and a Scrabble set contains only four U tiles. If you hold Q but no U, and all U tiles are played, you appear to be stuck.
Q-without-U words eliminate this problem entirely. QI alone — two letters, 11 points — turns Q from a liability into an asset. Players who know QI can always find a board position for it. Players who know QOPH, QANAT, and QIGONG have additional high-scoring options that opponents rarely challenge because the words are unfamiliar.
Understanding the full Q-without-U vocabulary also improves defensive play: you can plan ahead when Q is in your rack rather than waiting to draw a U.

Q Tile Strategy Guide
The QI-First Approach
When you draw Q, your first check should always be: can I play QI? The word requires only I, scores 11 points, and fits in two squares anywhere on the board where an I is adjacent or playable. In most board states, QI can be placed within a turn or two of drawing Q.
Keep this principle in mind from early game: when holding both Q and I, resist the temptation to play I elsewhere. Hold it specifically as your Q escape tile. Losing 1 point of I's value is far better than spending multiple turns unable to play Q.
Premium Square Placement for Q
| Placement | Score | Best Word |
|---|---|---|
| Q on Triple Letter Score | Q(10×3) + I(1) = 31pts | QI with Q on TLS |
| Word on Double Word Score | QI(11) × 2 = 22pts | QI on DWS |
| QOPH on Triple Letter Score | Q(30) + O(1) + P(3) + H(4) = 38pts | QOPH with Q on TLS |
| QOPH on Triple Word Score | QOPH(18) × 3 = 54pts | QOPH on TWS |
When to Exchange Q
Exchange Q only when all of the following are true simultaneously: no I is on your rack or visible to draw, no U is available anywhere, and the board has no position where QI, QAT, or QOPH can be placed even in future turns. This situation is genuinely rare. Most Scrabble positions allow a QI play within one or two turns. Use our Scrabble Solver to find Q plays from any rack before deciding to exchange.
Words That Contain Q-Without-U (But Are Not This Category)
Note that standard Q-with-U words remain strong plays when U is available. QUIZ (22pts), QUARTZ (24pts), QUICHE (20pts), and QUICK (20pts) all score extremely well. The Q-without-U list is your contingency vocabulary for when U is unavailable — not a replacement for the full Q strategy.
Common Confusion: Words That Are NOT Q-Without-U
Several Q words are commonly mistaken as Q-without-U plays. These words all contain U and require a U tile:
| Word | Contains U? | Valid Scrabble Word? | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| QUA | Yes — QUA | Yes, but requires U tile | 12pts |
| SUQ | Yes — SUQ | Yes, but requires U tile | 12pts |
| QUIZ | Yes — QUIZ | Yes, but requires U tile | 22pts |
| QUIP | Yes — QUIP | Yes, but requires U tile | 15pts |
| QUOD | Yes — QUOD | Yes (British slang for prison) | 14pts |
QUA and SUQ are genuinely useful Scrabble words worth knowing — they are simply not Q-without-U plays. QUA (meaning in the capacity of, as in the role of) scores 12 points. SUQ (a marketplace in Arab countries) also scores 12 points and is valid in both TWL and CSW.
